Martez Smith, PhD, LMSW

Dr. Smith, the Education Program Coordinator at Ballroom, We Care, boasts an impressive academic background, holding a PhD in Nursing and Health Science, in addition to being a Licensed Master Social Worker. Dr. Smith's scholarly pursuits are centered around addressing health disparities experienced by racial, sexual, and gender minority populations. His research endeavors are firmly grounded in community-driven, asset-based interventions aimed at fostering positive change.

Beyond his scholarly pursuits, Dr. Smith is an active participant in nationwide activism efforts, working alongside a dedicated network of advocates to advance social justice within the Ballroom community. Notably, he is a co-founder of the Keeping Ballroom Community Alive Network (KBCAN), where he plays a vital role in championing the community's welfare and well-being.

Dr. Smith's commitment to health and social welfare initiatives spans over a decade, dating back to 2010. His dedication and expertise were further recognized when he assumed the prestigious position of Inaugural Storytelling Co-Chair for the National HIV Prevention Conference hosted by the CDC in 2019. This role underscored his significant contributions to the field of HIV prevention and public health.

In addition to his academic and activist roles, Dr. Smith has been an integral part of the House/Ballroom community since 2009. He currently holds membership in the House of Xclusive-Lanvin in mainstream ballroom and the House of Hua Mulan in Kiki ballroom. Dr. Smith's multifaceted engagement within the community reflects his deep-rooted commitment to its diverse facets and well-being.
